Davie Police Department Update by Detective Greg Brillant

  • 6700 block of Dykes Road: motorcycle crash

  • Illegal handicapped parking enforcement will be heightened, $250 fine

  • Cars parked on swales & partial roadway is fine if emergency vehicles are able to get through

  • In past month, 13 car burglaries in Ivanhoe Estates and two east of Volunteer, involved mainly unlocked vehicles – LOCK YOUR CARS!

  • Car went into the canal in the 13900 block of Stirling, no injuries;

  • Car rollover, no ejections or injuries, closure of Stirling & Volunteer intersection;

  • Illegal Parking along 130th Avenue by parents picking up kids from school will be addressed as state law requires cars to park a certain distance from corner.

Update on Town Events and Projects by Councilman Gary Jablonski

Public Service Announcements:

  • October 10: Household Hazardous Waste, Electronics & Bulk Drop Off Event and Shred-A-Thon;

  • October 17: Craft Fair at Equestrian Park;

  • October 22: Mini-Flow: Florida Licensing on Wheels;

  • October 31: ROCA sponsoring Halloween at the Barn;

  • November 7: Town’s Birthday Party at the Rolling Oaks Barn with a “Dunk Tank” involving the Town Council.

Active Capital Projects:

  • Design phase of a new roof for Town Hall, parking lot will be improved;

  • Design phase for a playground at Caloosa Corner;

  • In the next 45 days, guardrails will be installed on Stirling, followed by striping.

The rumble strips on Stirling have dropped the average speed 5 MPH and the maximum 20 MPH. Resident noted that only 40 people supported rumble strips on Stirling.

Historical Society: Laura Warren reported that the Society has received very well-kept documents, artwork & memorabilia. Framed photos will be hung at Rolling Oaks Barn, and original Sunshine Ranches bronze plaques will be cut into the Equestrian Park stones. Town Hall walls will be utilized for exhibits; the first two will be “Early Pioneers” & “In the News.” Arcadia Publishing employs authors to write books about towns; Assembled historical information will be submitted to Arcadia Publishing which will publish a book of our history at no cost, for sale to residents for approx. $20-25.00.

  • Adopt a Corner: an initiative to clean up and landscape the entrances; need donations of plants, money, and volunteerism.

  • The SRHA will host a pumpkin patch at the Town’s birthday celebration.

Treasurer’s Report

Saied noted that the report is in October’s Waggler.

Committee Reports

Membership (Sandra): 307 members total. Bob made a donation for the beautification of the entrance walls; Ani singled out Judi and Bob for their tireless support; we need new people to get involved.

Drainage (Vince Falletta): The catch basin and drainage project on Mustang and Hancock hasn’t started yet; this is the newest project we have going. Thanked Laura for all of her work on the Historical Society.

Unfinished Business

Meeting Signs: Gratitude to Bob for going out on Mondays to place the signs and removing them on Thursdays.

Road Signs: Identifying all streets in Sunshine Ranches needing horse crossing signs, stop signs, speed limit signs and location of metal rods that need to be removed; wants to be consistent with the signage on our streets; submittal to Town by end of October.

New Business

Aster Knight: On November 14, there will be a Classic Car event in the Rolling Oaks Park; AKF was formed to partner with the Town in development of parks. To date, $80,000 has been raised and invested back into our parks.

Neighborhood Safety Grant: Ani stated that our proposal was decided upon by the majority of the members attending the general meetings; a petition with 80 signatures opposing the rumble strips was presented. Following is the general consensus from residents regarding the proposed rumble strips project:

  • Speeding is obviously a problem in the Ranches;

  • Negatives: Rumble strips may adversely affect golf carts & cars, potentially reduce property values, increase noise

  • Positives: Significant reduction of speeding & thru-traffic, No damage to cars

  • Alternate Solutions: Increased Police presence, Solar Powered Speed Limit Sign that flash vehicle’s speed, Town Survey, Camera

  • Conclusion: Davie Police will increase presence on Luray & Mustang for next 30 days, with resident feedback expected in late October. SRHA will research cost for solar speed limit signs & Camera solutions, discuss Survey option with SRW.

Davie Police Department Update by Officer D. Graziadei

  • 70 service calls in Sunshine Ranches this month;

  • 162 citations issued in August and 18 accidents reported;

  • Two golf carts were stolen from a fenced-in yard on Stirling;

  • Be vigilant of school zones and report any suspicious activity;

  • Resident asked that more attention be given to the side streets (Luray and Mustang) with regard to speeders trying to avoid Stirling.

Update on Town Events and Projects by Councilman Gary Jablonski

  • The Stirling Road guardrails will be installed before the striping is applied to the road, which will narrow the lanes;

  • A resident requested that the pothole on Holatee (Luray and Mustang) be filled

  • A resident asked how long a permitted building site can remain vacant

Guest Speaker: Chief Lee Bennett of the SWR Volunteer Fire Rescue

  • Has been involved with fire/rescue for 31 years, was Chief of Port Everglades;

  • SWRVFR has 40 certified firefighters, majority are EMTs and paramedics;

  • Area covered: 160th Avenue to US27 and Griffin to Sheridan

  • SWRVFR provides quicker emergency response; starting CPR & basics;

  • The contract with Davie is for $2.6 million, Town’s firefighters receive $340,000;

  • SWRVFR will schedule a night to teach a CPR class.

  • Safety Grant Application: Securing final bid, need letters from residents on Luray and Mustang related to speeding

  • Adopt a Corner: Both large signs are cleaned up; need volunteers on 9/12 & 9/26, 8-11:00 am for improvements; the Town has approved use of the water from the fire hydrant at Griffin and Hancock to water the plants there; the Town will provide a logo sign for the Flamingo and Stirling entrance.

  • Board Appreciation Event for the board members will take place on Sept. 4th.

  • Upcoming Events: Farmer’s Market at Craft Fair and the Aster Knight fundraiser; SRHA will host a tent at the Town’s birthday celebration on 11/7, joint HOA town-wide Christmas party on 12/19.

  • Dennis Hugdahl has resigned; Saied was appointed to serve as Treasurer until the next election;

  • Report: beginning balance of $1,549.02, one check written for $33.90, ending balance of $1,515.12.

Committee Reports

Waggler: There will be new ads in the October issue.

Membership: Two new members, 305 members total.

Sunshine (Rachel Greene): Sent three welcome letters to new property owners; her nephew, Vinton Blount, is a finalist on “America’s Got Talent”; advice: if your property is declared a wetland, fight it; the Greenes and Rosina won their cases.

Drainage (Vince Falletta): People use the canals as a disposal unit; Central Broward Water Control District uses thousands of our dollars to clean up our canals; volunteered to call members to attend our meetings.

Beautification: There are handouts for the Adopt-a-Corner project.

Ani thanked Chris for the new meeting signs and the Parkers, who placed the signs.

New Business

  • Rick Bell: AKF fundraiser: Nov. 14th, 11:00am-3:00pm; 200-300 classic cars, $20 to enter a car, prizes will be awarded; a country fair for families, staffed byTown volunteers; a booth run by the Rare Fruit and Vegetable Council; purpose is to raise funds to supplement and help improve the Town’s parks; Councilman Doug McKay challenged his fellow councilmen to participate in a “Dunk Booth.”

  • The SRHA has been asked to host a tent at the Town’s birthday party on 11/7

  • Call to Action: Volunteer sign up, show up for the clean-up events; speak passionately about the association to our neighbors.

  • No major crime activity reported since last meeting

  • Reminded everyone to continue to be vigilant because nearby neighborhoods have experienced car and home burglaries;

  • Year to date: 1299 traffic citations written town wide, 397 incidents reported.

  • Residents reported mail being stolen from mailboxes in Country Estates and Mustang Trail in SR. Officer was not aware but will check and report back next month.

  • Reminder to be on the lookout for credit card skimming devices on gas station pumps.

Update on Town Events & Projects: by Councilman Gary Jablonski:

  • As requested, provided copies of the full TISDOR repaving project from 2016-2035;

Update on Park and Ride off of I-75 and Griffin: by Vice Mayor Fisikelli:

  • July 9th MPO meeting resulted in this project not likely included in the long-term I-75 plan. Efforts by Councilman Doug McKay resulting in this victory were recognized.

  • Waggler increased from 16 to 20 pages: new features, new ads, spaced out and easier to read. Encouraged all members to be advocates in promoting the Waggler and seeking new advertisers and content.

  • Continuing to work on Adopt a Corner initiative, Safety Grant application, and upcoming community events. Volunteers needed for Beautification & Hospitality Committees.

  • Thanks to Chris Brownslow for new SRHA meeting signs. Volunteers needed for monthly placement and removal.

Committee Reports:

Waggler: Saied and Ellen were unable to attend this month’s meeting, but reported: $1,200 in checks for advertising and 12 checks from membership fees; New classified ad section - $10 for non-members, free to members, so encourage interested people to become members. (Clarification to statement made by Ani at meeting: “Residents or non-residents could be members.” - This is accurate, but according to the SRHA bylaws, members have to be property owners.)

Membership (Judi Parker): Current membership 303 – 12 new applications received during July – better than usual for this time of year. 47 away from goal of 350.

Sunshine (Rachel Greene): Reported Susan Winn’s sister’s passing. Susan served as past SRHA President. Also related story of resident calling her (through Waggler) for assistance with baby geese stuck in an un-occupied neighbor’s yard. Rachel and Bill Green were able to help with release of trapped animals which were extremely dehydrated. Rachel also proudly reported that her nephew, Vinton Blount is advancing on TV program “America’s Got Talent”!

Drainage (Vince Falletta): Thanked Councilman Doug McKay for motion to increase the membership of the Drainage Advisory Committee from 7 to 9 members. The contract for the improvements to the Mustang and Hancock drainage project is pending approval by Town. Also, Central Broward Drainage District has had to remove truckloads of garbage from our canals for years. He reminded residents not to use the canals as a waste disposal area and to be on the lookout for people that do.

Hospitality (Rosina Marrapodi): Asked for feedback on what snacks/drinks members most like to have at our monthly meetings so that she can accommodate them.

Guest Speaker: Emily McCord – Town Grant Writer

  • Will be requesting approval from Town Council for $50K grant submittal to the State for the development of a passive ball field at the Country Estates Park on 190th and Griffin Rd. This will not require a match from the town. Also reported that the Town is seeking bids for the installation of guardrails along portions of Stirling Rd. in SR. Confirmed that contract for drainage project on Hancock and Mustang has been awarded by the Town.

Unfinished Business:

  • Meeting Reminder Signs: Thanks to Chris Brownslow for getting new signs made. Bob Parker made a motion for $100 donation as appreciation for Chris’ school Art program (for work on new signs). No quorum was present for motion’s approval. Ani will check into ways to secure a donation for the group.

  • Neighborhood Safety Grant: Application will be submitted for installation of rumble strips before STOP signs on Mustang and Luray Roads as a traffic calming solution.

  • Adopt a Corner initiative: Plan is to beautify the surrounding area of all SR existing signs. Looking for donations of plants and/or maintenance. An informational hand-out will be provided for use when approaching businesses/nurseries/residents for contributions.

New Business:

  • Guest Speakers: Please submit ideas for guest speakers for future meetings.

  • Historical Materials: Historical Society is working on display of historical material at Town Hall. Residents are encouraged to donate memorabilia to add to the display. Contact Juanita Romance at Town Hall for information/donations. Special thanks to Vince Falleta and Ruth Wolff for their efforts, additional volunteers would be welcomed to help sort & tag items.

  • Road Signs: Preparation of comprehensive plan of all road signs that are needed within SR (STOP signs, horse signs etc.) as well as to remove any damaged metal stakes that previously had signs attached. Town Councilman Doug McKay agreed to provide large area map to Ani to facilitate this.

Open Discussion:

  • A resident reported that a cover is missing from a fire hydrant on Mustang trail;

  • A resident asked if out of town guests can come to our meetings - Ani confirmed;

  • Aster Knight (AKF) reminded members about the Classic Car show fundraiser scheduled for November 14th at the Rolling Oaks Park. Funds will be used to supplement any grants received from the State for the addition of the passive ball field at Rolling Oaks Park.

  • Call to Action: Ani encouraged the members to do one of the following:

  • Volunteer on the SRHA Beautification or Event Committees;

  • Try to secure a new advertiser for the Waggler;

  • Invite someone to next month’s meeting.
